SEPA Direct Debit is the cheapest, most reliable way to move money in Europe — but the consumer experience has always been terrible. We’re fixing that. GiroTap brings inline, biometric bank payments up to parity with Apple Pay and Google Pay, without giving up the cost advantage or the direct merchant-to-customer settlement that makes SEPA great in the first place.
Open banking rewrote European payments law in 2018. The promise was simple: customers would pay merchants directly from their bank account, cutting out card networks, cutting out fees, cutting out the middlemen. Half a decade on, traditional pay-by-bank still accounts for a rounding error of e-commerce volume — because the experience is brutal.
Pick a bank. Get redirected to a branded portal. Sign in with a username you’ve forgotten. Switch to your bank’s mobile app. Approve. Wait. Get bounced back to the merchant. Hope the session didn’t expire. Traditional PSD2 checkouts routinely drop 40 to 60 percent of shoppers between “pay” and “paid.”
Meanwhile, merchants keep handing 1 to 3 percent of every euro to card networks — not because they want to, but because the alternatives make customers give up at the till.
We looked at every failed attempt to fix pay-by-bank and concluded that piecemeal fixes weren’t enough. The authentication had to change. The risk model had to change. And the merchant protection story had to change. GiroTap rebuilds all three from scratch, on top of rails that already work.
Face ID, Touch ID, and platform passkeys replace bank logins and app-switching. Consent happens inline, on the merchant page, in under three seconds. No redirects, no session drops, no “open your banking app” detour.
Every linked account comes with rich open banking signals: is it a primary account, how long has it been active, does it carry real balance coverage, are there risk flags? Merchants know exactly what they’re debiting before a single euro moves.
Every payment generates a signed mandate and a tamper-evident evidence bundle: device attestation, biometric assertion, merchant context, the exact amount the customer agreed to. When a chargeback comes, you don’t argue — you produce proof.
